JSLC General Assembly Meeting commemorating its 1st Anniversary was held at Hitotsubashi University Memorial Hall on November 22nd, 2014. Attorney Mr. Makoto Sakai delivered a speech titled “Problems in Japanese mass media—tendency to regard a suspect as guilty” for the assembly meeting reached its first birthday. Mr. Sakai explained that the press in Japan has the tendency to regard a suspect as guilty and he introduced the cases such as Matsumoto sarin gas attack, HIV tainted blood scandal, and criminal case of the Long Term Credit Bank of Japan. Considering the huge influences of reporting a crime using real name of a suspect and jointly accusing a suspect with police and prosecutors, Japanese mass media should firstly investigate the fact by themselves and conduct power surveillance without accommodating to popular tastes, insisted Mr. Sakai. Impressed by his speech, JSLC members recognized that JSLC have taken its first step toward the goal of assisting family members of a perpetrator and a suspect.
